All students in Years 7 and Year 8 study a language. We have researched and developed a context-based approach to learning in Key Stage 3 to enthuse students and build on prior knowledge, which students have developed in primary schools. These contexts are designed to allow students to engage in more complex aspects of language learning in preparation for the requirements of the reforms for GCSE.

We are proud to offer Latin to some of our students in KS3. We believe that our students will leave Dyke House School with a life-long impression of the importance of Latin in modern society, as well as the ability to make sound connections between language and knowledge through their understanding of Latin.

At KS4 Students continue to study the language they have studied in KS3. There is the option in KS4 for students to study a second language to support and deepen their existing linguistic competencies.

Department statement

The MFL department aim to ensure that the language learning experience for all our students is challenging and enjoyable. Students of Dyke House College will study French from year 7 and will have the opportunity to opt for German, Spanish or Latin during their time with us. We fundamentally believe that the study of languages plays an important part in preparing students for their future lives. In today's global economy it is vital that students are equipped with the confidence to communicate in the target language, linguistic skills, cultural awareness and intercultural understanding and as teachers we are passionate about helping to prepare our students with these skills. The study of foreign languages to GCSE level affords insights into other cultures, broadens horizons and deepens the learner's understanding of his or her own mother tongue.
