Computer Science



Computer Science at Dyke House College aims to give pupils the capability to participate and engage in modern society. The increasing use of technology in all aspects of society makes confident,creative and productive use an essential skill for life.

Computer Science encompasses not only the mastery of logic and computational techniques, but also the understanding to apply these skills purposefully, safely and responsibly in learning, everyday life and employment. We aim to give pupils the skills and understanding needed to use technology effectively, every day and in the world of work ahead.

We have five specialist Computer Science teachers who are passionate about imparting knowledge for successful students. Within Dyke House College each of the independent schools have a dedicated ICT classroom, all of which are fitted with the most up to date Apple computers. The equipment is of the highest quality and has the technical capacity to allow students to use industry standard software.

Computer Science GCSE

This course gives the students a chance to become true computational thinkers, developing their independence and trouble shooting skills by creating computer programs at all levels that display their aptitude when developing code for complex problems. We deliver a course that will give students the skills needed to engage with the computer on another level.

This course of study is broken into 3 units;

Component 1: Principles of Computer Science (written exam).

Component 2: Application of Computational Thinking (written exam).

Component 3: Project (practical programming project).

Computer Science A-Level

Computer Science is a practical subject where students can apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real-world systems. It is an intensely creative subject that combines invention and excitement, and can look at the natural world through a digital prism. The aims of this qualification are to enable learners to develop:

• An understanding and ability to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including: abstraction, decomposition, logic, algorithms and data representation

• The ability to analyse problems in computational terms through practical experience of solving such problems, including writing programs to do so

• The capacity to think creatively, analytically, logically and critically

• The capacity to see relationships between different aspects of computer science

• Mathematical skills.

This course of study is broken into 3 units;

Component 01 - Content of Computer systems (written exam).

Component 02 - Content of Algorithms and programming (written exam).

Component 03 - Programming project (practical programming project).
