Dyke House Sports & Technology College

Attainment and Achievement through Creativity, Collaboration and Character

The Maths department at Dyke House Academy constantly strives to improve the lives of the pupils that pass through it. Our core aim is to provide pupils with all of the skills that they need to be contributing citizens; adding value to their own lives and society as a whole.

The learning experience of each and every pupil is tailored to their own needs, with all staff striving to individualise learning journeys so that each pupil knows what they should be achieving and how they are going to achieve it. There will be struggles along the way, but pupils will learn to enjoy overcoming obstacles through structured support and their development of independence and interdependence.

The use of the fantastic facilities here at Dyke House encourages pupils to build confidence and have a "can do" attitude. The use of ICT in the mathematics department is exemplary and supports pupils' learning. It is one of the ways in which we build links across all aspects of living through mathematics, to enrich the future of our pupils.

At Dyke House Academy we have a rolling curriculum, which takes into account both pupils' starting points and their potential. Rather than teach given topics in each year group, pupils will access materials that will constantly challenge them and push them to improve both their knowledge and understanding of mathematics. The schemes of work are progressive and allow pupils to access a mixture of the four strands of mathematics at all stages:

The assessment of pupils at Dyke House informs the way the learning is shaped. Staff pay close attention to the individual needs of pupils and the areas in which they have particular strengths and areas for development. This practice is adopted from the first day of year 7 until pupils leave us in year 11.

At key stage 4, all pupils will sit a mathematics GCSE. In addition to this, pupils who perform well and exceed their individual expectations will have the opportunity to sit an additional GCSE in statistics.
